And the district is basically positioning for the big event: the region.
So with February peeking around the corner, here’s a look at the Region 1 rankings in each classification (along with district and region sites):
1-AAA AT DANIEL BOONE
2. Morristown East
3. Sevier County
4. Tennessee High
(tie) Morristown West
The Indians have established themselves as the region’s No. 1 team with a pair of wins over Morristown East, but the Hurricanes have won seven in a row overall. Sevier County is also hot with 10 wins in 11 games with the lone loss to East.
Morristown West has recent losses to East and Sevier County while the Vikings must recover from Friday’s shocking loss to Cherokee.
1-AA AT HAPPY VALLEY
1. Johnson County
4. Sullivan South
(tie) S. Greene
It’s hard to find a clear separation point between Elizabethton and Johnson County. They split a pair of close games, each winning on the other team’s home court. It’s more like 1A and 1B, but the Longhorns earned the most recent head-to-head win.
Greeneville gets the No. 3 spot despite a pair of losses to South Greene, which has the inside track to the District 2 title. South Greene, Sullivan South and Grainger haven’t separated from each other.
1-A AT SULLIVAN NORTH
(District 1 at Unaka)
1. University High
4. Hancock County
University High has been consistent enough to earn the top spot.
Cosby may be better than its 15-7 record indicates. The Eagles have won 13 of their last 16 games with the losses coming against Class AAA state power Maryville, Class AAA Knox Powell, and Class AA power Elizabethton.
Hampton and Hancock County have a thin separation.
1. Science Hill
2. Morristown West
3. Jefferson County
This ranking — with Science Hill on top — reflects the injury to Morristown West’s leading scorer, Blayre Shultz, who reportedly could return before the tournaments. The Lady Trojans lost 34-26 to Jeff County on Friday without Shultz.
Science Hill has won 16 of its last 17 games. Jeff County owns a recent win over D-B.
1. South Greene
3. Sullivan Central
It’s clear cut at the top with the Lady Rebels standing as the region’s best. Grainger is a strong No. 2, owning a win over No. 3 Sullivan Central. Greeneville’s record (9-11) doesn’t look good, but the Lady Greene Devils have faced a tough schedule and played D-B a one-point game Saturday.
3. North Greene
It looks like a razor-thin margin between Cloudland and Cosby. The Lady Highlanders have won 12 of 13, giving them the No. 1 nod at this point. North Greene is in the top-spot mix as well as it earned a recent win over Cloudland. And Unaka defeated North Greene recently.
NEGLIA RECEIVES HONOR
Dobyns-Bennett junior Sasha Neglia was chosen Monday as the Gatorade Tennessee Girls Cross Country Runner of Year. She is first winner of the honor from Dobyns-Bennett.
Neglia becomes a finalist for the national award, which will be announced in February.
She won the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional championships this past season and followed up by earning All-America status at the NXN Final.
A member of the Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, Neglia has volunteered locally as a youth track and swimming coach. She has a weighted 4.52 GPA.
Happy Valley’s Michael Harrah will make his college choice official on Feb. 6. He will sign to play football with Carson-Newman at 1:45 in the high school library.
